The main difference between coaching and mentoring lies in the role of the specialist and the method of work. In coaching, you are the expert of your own life and the coach helps you discover your own potential through questions. In mentoring, the expert is the mentor, who shares their experience, advice and ready-made solutions in a specific field.
Very often, when clients seek support in professional development, they confuse these two concepts. They say: "I need coaching, because I don't know how to lead this marketing campaign" or "I'm looking for a mentor, to help me believe in myself." Both of these statements contain a fundamental error. Let's see what the fundamental difference between coaching and mentoring is and how to choose the right tool for yourself.
The biggest myth about it is the belief that a coach is someone who will tell you how to live your life. Nothing could be further from the truth! Professional coaching is based on the assumption: the client is inherently creative, resourceful and the greatest expert on their own life.
Role: the coach does not advise or judge. Instead, they ask deep, sometimes uncomfortable questions. They use psychological tools to help you identify blockages, values and hidden talents.
Knowledge: the coach does not need to know your industry; their work is based on the process (way of thinking), not on content (hard knowledge).
Example: If you tell the coach: "I can't get along with my boss," the coach will not provide you with a ready-made solution but will ask: "What do you need to feel more confident in this relationship?"
Mentoring is a completely different dynamic. This relationship is based on the direct transfer of knowledge, experience and life wisdom from a more experienced person to a less experienced one.
Role: a mentor is a guide, a person who has already walked the path you are currently on, advises, suggests and shares their failures and successes.
Knowledge: a mentor must be an expert in your field or in the area where you want to develop.
Example: If you tell the mentor: "I can't get along with my boss," the mentor will likely respond: "When I was in your position ten years ago, I had a similar problem. I used this negotiation strategy. Let's try to implement it for you."
To make your decision easier, I have gathered the key differences below:
1. Main working tool:
- coaching - asking questions
- mentoring - advice and sharing experience
2. Who is the expert?:
- coaching - Client
- mentoring - Mentor
3. Main goal of the process:
- coaching - discovering potential, building self-awareness and agency
- mentoring - quickly acquiring specific knowledge and skills.
Imagine you are standing at the foot of a great mountain. The mentor is an experienced climber who hands you a map and says: "Go this way, that one is dangerous; I was cautious of it last year." The coach, on the other hand, is a trainer at your side who asks: "What mountain do you really want to summit today? How will you prepare your muscles to get there?"
The decision depends solely on the challenge you are currently facing.
Choose mentor support if:
you are entering a new industry or taking on a completely new position (e.g., getting promoted to manager)
you want to avoid typical beginner mistakes and need specific know-how.
you lack hard business or specialized knowledge.
Choose coach support when:
you theoretically know what you should do, but for some reason, you are not doing it (fear, perfectionism, lack of assertiveness is blocking you)
you feel stuck and don’t know which direction to steer your career or life
you want to build deep self-confidence based on your own resources (e.g., based on Gallup's strengths)
On the way to the summit, we often need both types of support. The key is to wisely choose the tools for the stage you are currently at.
